· HANDLER TRAINING. With the exception of law enforcement agencies, DSS presently trains handlers for internal use only. We do not train apprentice handlers. If you are interested in career opportunities with DSS, please go to our "CAREER" page.

· CANINE TRAINING. With the exception of law enforcement agencies, DSS presently trains dogs for internal use only. We do not train personal dogs. Only dogs owned or purchased by DSS.

· DOG DONATIONS. Please note that canine candidates must be physically located in Northern California or Northern Illinois. We prefer unneutered purebred Labrador Retriever, German Shepard, or Belgian Malinois males between 6 months and two & a half years old. All candidates must be interviewed for drive, motivation, appearance, physical health, temperament, and energy level. If a dog is accepted but fails the physical exam, the explosive detection dog course, or initial validation, the donator can have the dog returned. Otherwise the dog will be placed in a good home through local dog placement agencies. Breed, gender, and neutering is not necessarily a disqualifier. If you think you have a good candidate, email us the information on your dog.

· DOG PURCHASING. DSS may, under certain limited conditions, purchase canine candidates to attend our explosive detection dog course. Please review "dog donations" above for the specific requirements as to age, breed etc. For dogs we would consider buying, our purchase agreement stipulates that if the dog passes the selection, interview, DSS will take possession of the dog upon a refundable deposit to the owner. If the dog passes the physical exam, the explosive detection dog course, and initial validation, DSS will pay in full the agreed purchase price. If the dog fails the physical exam, the explosive detection dog course, or initial validation, the dog will be returned to the owner and the deposit refunded to DSS.
